# Installation

# TrueNAS Scale ISO

To install the operating system, we first need the TrueNAS Scale ISO. You can download it for free from the TrueNAS website.

# USB Bootstick

We will use Rufus to create a bootable USB stick, as it is open-source and pretty reliable.

  1. Start Rufus and select your USB stick and the downloaded ISO. The default settings are fine, so just hit start.

  2. Rufus will prompt for the write mode. Select Write in DD Image mode as the other can lead to problems (at least happened to me one time).

  3. Confirm the message with OK

  4. The status will show Ready when Rufus finishes. Now you can close the application and remove the USB stick.

# OS Installation

  1. Boot from the USB stick and select Start TrueNAS SCALE Installation

  2. Select Install/Upgrade and confirm with OK

  3. Select the drives you want to use for the OS (in my case sdg and sdh) and confirm with OK

  4. Confirm the message with Yes

  5. Select Administrative user (admin) and confirm with OK

  6. Enter a password for the user and confirm with OK

  7. Choose Create swap

  8. Wait for the installation to complete.

  9. Confirm the message with OK

  10. Remove the USB stick, select Reboot system and confirm with OK

  11. Select TrueNAS Scale GNU/Linux 22.12.3.3 or just wait a few seconds.

  12. After the OS is booted, you will see the following screen. Open a browser and enter the URL to access the web user interface.

  13. Now you can log in with admin as your username and your password.
